On December 22, 1946, the first USSR ice hockey championship opened with games in Moscow, Leningrad, Arkhangelsk, Riga and Kaunas. Since then, December 22 has been considered the birthday of Russian ice hockey, one of the most popular and successful sports in the country. Over the past 75 years, Soviet and Russian players won numerous awards, including 9 gold medals at the Winter Olympics and 27 World Champion titles. Domestic hockey has given the world many outstanding players, whose names are forever inscribed in history in golden letters.
