The battle took place in the Chesma Bay on June 24–26 (July 5–7) of 1770 during the Russian-Turkish War of 1768–1774.
The Russian Navy lost no ships; 11 people died. The Turkish fleet, which for long had been considered invincible, was defeated. The victory in the Chesma Bay played a decisive role during the war, disrupting the communication movements of the Turks and establishing a blockade of one of the straits, namely the Dardanelles.
The postal block provides an image of a fragment of I.K. Aivazovsky’s painting Fight in the Strait of Chios, 1848, Aivazovsky National Art Gallery in Feodosia.
