The stamps feature architecture and Orthodox icons of Russia and Cyprus. The Icon of Our Lady Iverskaya is named after Iversky monastery on the mountain of Athos (Greece), where it miraculously appeared in the end of 10 c. Today the miraculous icon of Our Lady Iverskaya, one of the most revered in Russia, is in the Resurrection Church in Sokolniki, Moscow. The Stavrovuni Monastery (St. Cross Mountain) was founded in 327 by St. Helena. Today's buildings of the monastery date from 18c. The cross of the iconostasis and frescos are of particular interest. St. Nicholas was archbishop of Myra in Lycia. In the Orthodox tradition he is considered a great miracle worker. St. Nicholas took part in the First Oecumenical Counci at Nicaea in 325 at which the Nicaean symbol of faith was approved. St. Nicholas is revered all over the Christian world. Almost every town in Russia used to have a church devoted to him. From end of 15c - early 16 c. St. Nicholas is regarded as the patron saint of Moscow. The two arch-way Resurrection (Iversky) Gate was erected in 1534 as part of the stone wall protecting the Kitai-Gorod. The gate is also called the Resurrection Gate after an icon of the Resurrection which was placed above the gate, and Iversky Gate after a chapel built in 1669 for the icon of Our Iverskaya Lady. The year of 1929 saw the destruction of the chapel followed by the demolition of the gate. In 1995 the gate and the chapel were rebuilt.
