The Moscow Metro is one of the capital's major landmarks, many stations of which are the samples of architecture. An amazing underground complex built in Moscow astonishes with cheerful design, unique images and beautiful architectural compositions. It is a place where engineering solutions are harmoniously combined with the artists' inspirations.
The design of Smolenskaya station is devoted to heroic struggle and victories of Russian people. The end wall of the main hall is decorated with a snow-white haut-relief featuring soldiers against the background of streaming flags, created by Georgy Motovilov.
Polyanka station is designed in plain architectural forms. The hall end is decorated with Young Family, a colored ceramic sculptural composition by Sergey Goryainov. It represents the image of Soviet youth who committed the labor feats in fulfilment of five-year plans.
Sympathy, a monument to homeless dogs, was put up in a passage of Mendeleyevskaya station in 2007. Created by Aleksandr Tsigal, it is a bronze figure of a stray dog on a low pedestal. The sculpture appeared after a notorious event: a homeless dog called Malchik, who lived at this station for a long time, was killed in 2001 as a result of a conflict with a local woman, who used to walk her pedigree dog there.
Ploshchad Revolyutsii station is considered a gallery of sculptures featuring images of the great revolution. There are 76 bronze figures of Soviet people installed on pedestals in pillar corners. The sculptures are made under the direction of Matvey Manizer, a famous sculptor. The total of 20 different images are located in a chronological order from October 1917 until December 1937. All figures, except for pioneers, are made standing on their knees or sitting or bending in order to fit them into archways.
