The Nobel Prize in Physics is a yearly award given by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences. It was established by the will of Alfred Nobel in 1895. The first Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded in 1901 to German physicist Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen. Thus far, the prize has been awarded to 209 individuals.

Ilya Mikhailovich Frank (1908–1990) was an outstanding scientist of our time. He received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1958 jointly with Pavel Cherenkov and Igor Tamm for explaining the phenomenon of Cherenkov radiation – an electromagnetic radiation emitted when a charged particle passes through a dielectric medium at a speed greater than the phase velocity of light in that medium.

Lev Davidovich Landau (1908–1968) was an outstanding Soviet theoretical physicist. He was the winner of the 1962 Nobel Prize in Physics “for his pioneering theories of condensed matter, especially liquid helium”.

Aleksandr Mikhailovich Prokhorov (1916–2002) was an outstanding Soviet physicist, and one of the founders of quantum electronics and laser technology. He was the winner of the 1964 Nobel Prize in Physics jointly with Nikolay Basov and Charles Hard Townes “for fundamental work in the field of quantum electronics, which has led to the construction of oscillators and amplifiers based on the maser-laser principle”.

Pyotr Leonidovich Kapitsa (1894–1984) was a Soviet physicist, and popular science communicator. Twice Hero of Socialist Labor, he won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1978 “for his basic inventions and discoveries in the area of low-temperature physics”.
