The Nobel Prize in Literature is a prize awarded annually since 1901 for achievements in literature. The first winner was a French poet and essay writer René François Armand (Sully) Prudhomme. In 1933, Ivan Bunin was the first Russian writer to win the Nobel Prize in literature “for humble mastery with which he develops traditions of classical Russian prose”. In 1970, the Nobel Prize in Literature was awarded to Alexandr Solzhenitsyn “for moral force drawing upon traditions of the great Russian literature”. Joseph Brodsky received the prize in 1987 “for overarching literature activity notable for clarity of thought and poetical intensity”.
