Today, May 17, 2017, Major General Viktor Vasilyevich Gorbatko, two-times Hero of the Soviet Union, Soviet cosmonaut pilot, Union of Philatelists of Russia Honorary President, passed away at the age of 83 years.
Viktor was a courageous and selfless man. He did considerable for our Motherland. He had three space missions under his belt, and became a cosmonaut unit leader in 1982.
In 1988, Mr. Gorbatko led the All-Union Society of Philatelists of the USSR, and became the Chairman of the Central Board of the Union of Philatelists of the USSR (1989–1992) after its reformation. Later, he was the UPR President (2001–2009); he was an honorary president of the society of our country’s philatelists since 2009.
