On October 2, two stamps dedicated to parrots were put into postal circulation in the Inhabitants of Russian Zoos series

Russian zoos are home to a variety of animals — from Asian elephants, crocodiles and alpacas to turtles, frogs and flamingos. There are also representatives of endangered species: the Amur tiger, the Pallas's cat, the Himalayan black bear, the Amur leopard, the wolverine and many others. Among the inhabitants of the zoos, there are parrots.

A parrot was first mentioned in Rus in 1490, when it was presented as a gift to Princess Sophia Palaeologus. A parrot cannot be confused with any other bird due to its atypically bright coloring and specific body structure. The most common coloration found among parrots is grass-green. The size can vary from 9.5 cm to 1 m. The external features of the feathered bird depend on the breed, habitat and sex. There are approximately 330 species of parrots, which differ in unique plumage and habits. Among them are macaws, budgerigars, African gray parrots, cockatoos, cockatiels, lovebirds, kakarikis, rosellas, regent parrots, Superb Parrots, Senegalese parrots, burrowing parrots, grass parrakeets, eclectus parrots, etc.

For example, the collection of the Moscow Zoo includes various species of parrots: macaws, cockatoos, Amazon parrots, ring-necked parakeets, the Patagonian conure and vulturine parrots, as well as African greys. In October of 2025, Hyacinth Macaws were brought to the Center for Reproduction of Rare Animal Species in Moscow; it is a rare species of parrots inhabiting Brazil, Bolivia and Paraguay. The wingspan of these birds reaches 2 m, and their powerful beak allows them to easily crack Brazilian nuts which are the main food of these parrots in the natural environment. The zoo also has a pair of vulturine parrots who were brought to the zoo in March of 2021; after having passed quarantine, they were placed in a separate flight pen in the Bird House on the Old Territory. The birds are very attached to each other and stay together all the time, taking food from hands.

Populating the zoos with rare animal species is part of species conservation programs. Specialists provide conditions as close to natural ones as possible so that the birds can breed and feel comfortable. At the same time, an individual diet is selected for each species.

The postage stamps feature the red macaw and the military macaw in their natural habitat.

In addition to the issue of the postage stamps, JSC Marka produced First Day Covers and special cancels for Moscow, St. Petersburg and Yaroslavl, as well as two unstamped postcards, and an illustrated cover with postage stamps, a label and a First Day Cover with a cancellation for Moscow inside.
