On April 27, four stamps dedicated to the 100th Anniversary of the All-Russian Society for Nature Conservation were put into postal circulation



The All-Russian Society for Nature Protection (VOOP) is an all-Russian noncommercial and culturally educational environmental organization. It was founded in 1924. The idea of institution of the Society was approved by A. Lunacharsky, N. Krupskaya and M. Pokrovsky. The first Chairman of the Society was zoologist, Professor G. Kozhevnikov.

The aims and objectives of the VOOP are to maintain a healthy and favorable ecological situation in the country, to take measures for environmentally safe and sustainable development of the country, to protect the environment and preserve the species diversity of flora and fauna, to maintain and promote the health of the people of the country.

A gyrfalcon is a carnivorous bird of the falcon family. It is the largest member of the typical falcon genus. Plumage coloration varies from white or white with sparse dark mottling to dark, with predominance of brownish-grey tones, especially on the upper side of the body, wings and the tail. Light-colored individuals are more common in Eastern Siberia and Kamchatka. It is registered in the Red Book of the Russian Federation and is bred in nurseries.

A carpenter bee is a species of solitary bees of the bee family. The head, thorax, abdomen and legs are black, shiny, with sparse hairs. The wings are dark, with blue-violet luster. The antennae are black above and reddish below. They are similar in appearance to bumblebees. In Russia, the species is widespread in the Krasnodar and Stavropol Territories, Middle and Lower Volga, the Central Black Earth Region and other territories with similar climate. With the help of powerful mandibles, they gnaw out nests in the wood of various buildings and in damaged trees. The species is registered in the Red Book of the Russian Federation.

A Black Sea bottlenose dolphin is a subspecies of bottlenose dolphins, marine cetacean mammals of the dolphin family. It is an endemic of the Black Sea, a rare endangered subspecies, included in the Red Book of the Russian Federation. The body dimensions of the dolphin are average for marine species. The body length is up to 3.5 m, the weight is about 300 kg. The skull of the dolphin is large, the brain is massive with a large number of cerebral gyri. Currently, there has been observed a decrease in the population of these animals.

A polar wolf is a light-colored subspecies of the wolf of the dog family. The subspecies is distinguished not only on the basis of morphological features, but also on the basis of habitat. It inhabits the entire territory of the Arctic and the tundra. It can live at sub-zero temperatures for years without seeing sunlight for months and without having food for weeks. The polar wolf is threatened with extinction by a climate change leading to a decrease in the polar wolf's traditional nutritive base.

The postage stamps provide images of a gyrfalcon, a carpenter bee, a Black Sea bottlenose dolphin, and a polar wolf.

In addition to the issue of the postage stamps, JSC Marka produced First Day Covers and special cancels for Moscow, St. Petersburg, Sevastopol, Krasnodar, Murmansk, Penza, Pereslavl-Zalessky of the Yaroslavl Region, Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, Rostov-on-Don, Ryazan, Salekhard and Stavropol; as well as unstamped postcards, an illustrated cover with a block of four, a label and a First Day Cover with a cancel for Moscow inside.
