Russia has been a Member State of UNESCO since April 21, 1954.

In July of 2004, the Park Reserved Kenozerye was included in the UNESCO World Heritage sites under the name of Kenozerye Cultural Landscape. It is located on the territory of the Kenozersky National Park. Its objects have no analogues in the world. It is a unique example of the Russian village way of life, which has been preserved far away from large cities. A distinctive feature is the famous Russian wooden architecture: the territory of the National Park is home to more than 30 chapels and churches, which make it possible to see in miniature the history of architectural development of the Russian North. The key sights are the ensembles of the Porzhensky and Pochezersky churchyards that are regarded monuments of architecture of federal significance, as well as numerous churches and chapels.

The postage stamp provides an image of a chapel in the name of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker (late 18th century) in the village of Vershinino; the margins of the souvenir sheet feature the typical landscape of Kenozerye, Lake Kenozero.
