№ 1077-1078. 150th anniversary of M.A.Vrubel (1856-1910), the painter

M.A. Vrubel (1856-1910) is a Russian painter, graphic artist, the biggest representative of symbolism and modern in the Russian fine arts. He studied in the Academy of Arts and was one of the most active members of the Mamontov’s artistic society. He painted a number of his best pictures and worked in majolica style in Abramtsevo. His most famous pictures are “The demon (sitting)” (1890), “The Princess Day-dream” mosaic (1896), “The Pan” (1899), “The Swan Princess” (1900). The painter’s self-portrait (1904-1905) is depicted on the stamp.

“The Swan Princess” picture was painted in a village in Chernigov region where the painter’s family usually spent their summer in 1900. It is one of the most delicate, intimate female characters captivating by its unfading freshness and by its particular majestic beauty peculiar to Russian fairy-tales.
