№ 1075-1076. 175th birth anniversary of N.N.Ge (1831-1894), the painter

N. N. Ghe (1831-1894) is a famous Russian painter, a master of portrait and of the historical painting. He graduated from St. Petersburg Academy of Arts in 1857. N.N. Ghe was a founder and a member of the Traveling Artistic Exhibitions Association. He was influenced greatly by K.P.Brullov and A.A.Ivanov. His pictures “The last supper” (1863, The Russian Museum), “In the Gethsemane Garden” (1869-1880, The State Tretiakov Gallery), “Peter the Great interrogating prince Alexis Petrovich in Petergof” (1871, The State Tretiakov Gallery) have brought him fame. A portrait of N.N. Ghe by I.E. Repin is depicted on the stamp.

He deprived the historical episode of the past of every officiousness and gave psychological expressiveness to it.
