Pavel Osipovich Sukhoi (1895–1975) was an aircraft designer, one of the founders of the national jet-propelled and supersonic aviation. Twice Hero of Socialist Labor, laureate of the Stalin, Lenin and state prizes.
In 1939, Pavel Sukhoi was appointed chief designer at an aircraft manufacturing plant, which later will become a part of a Design Bureau (currently PAO Sukhoi Company). In cooperation with his team, he was engaged in the development of short-range bomber Su-2, gun fighter I-135, and armored attack aircraft Su-6.
In 1945, Sukhoi was one of the first to start working on jet aircraft projects in the conviction that they are the future of aviation. Under his leadership, two concepts of new machines were simultaneously under development: with a swept wing and with a triangular wing. Both projects were successfully implemented, later on, a Su-17 was designed, which become the first variable-geometry wing aircraft in the USSR.
In total, Pavel Sukhoi designed about 50 aircraft variations, many of which have made revolutionized the aircraft industry.
Pavel O. Sukhoi made a great contribution to the development of the home aviation industry and strengthening of the defense industrial of the country. The designers of the Design Bureau used the technologies devised by Pavel O. Sukhoi absorbed in the process of engineering and trials to create aircraft of the next generation: Su-35, Su-57 and Superjet SSJ-100.
