The Russian Museum is the world's largest museum of Russian art, a unique architectural and art ensemble in the historical center of St. Petersburg.

The grand opening of the Russian Museum for visitors took place on March 19, 1898. The basis of the Russian Museum collection was formed of articles and artworks donated by the Winter Palace, the Gatchina and Alexander Palaces, by the Hermitage and the Academy of Arts, as well as from collections of private antiquarians.

Nowadays, the museum collection accounts for about 400,000 exhibits and covers all historical periods and trends in the development of Russian Art, the main types and genres, art movements and schools over more than 1000 years: from the X to the XXI century.

The postal stamp provides an image of the Mikhailovsky palace; the margins feature a fragment of the portrait of Alexaner III by I.N. Kramskoy (State Russian Museum, 1886).

Alexander Nikolaevich Benois (1870–1960) was a Russian painter, art historian, art critic, founder and chief ideologist of The World of Art.

Among the outstanding paintings by Benois, we will name the following: Military Parade of Emperor Paul I (1907, State Russian Museum), Entry of Empress Catherine II in the Tsarskoye Selo Palace (1909, State Art Gallery of Armenia, Yerevan), Petersburg Street at the Time of Peter I (1910, private collection in Moscow) and Peter I Strolling in the Summer Garden (1910, State Russian Museum).

The stamps provide images of paintings A.N. Benois’ Portrait by L.S. Bakst (1898, State Russian Museum) and Military Parade of Emperor Paul I (1907, State Russian Museum) by A. N. Benois.
