The Russian Navy is the main naval capacity of our country, a foreign policy tool used to protect the state interests. It currently comprises the Baltic Fleet, the Northern Fleet, the Pacific Fleet, the Black Sea Fleet, the Caspian Flotilla, naval bases and detached squadrons. Nuclear-powered submarines and missile-carrying naval aircraft are the main attack force.
Ships of the Russian atomic icebreaking fleet are used to escort ships along the Northeast Passage, develop the Arctic shelf, carry out high-latitude scientific expeditions and for touristic cruises to the North Pole. Atomic icebreakers are complex floating engineering structures with nuclear propulsion system capable of sailing in ice-covered waters without refueling all year round.
In Russia, Arctic shuttle tankers, research and ice-breaking vessels, tug boats and other ships are used to ensure effective operation of oil and gas companies, and oil platforms. The main activities are prospecting works at the Arctic continental shelf, harbor and logistic services, and rescue operations.
