Sergei Shtemenko (1907-1976) was a Soviet military leader, the Chief of the USSR Armed Forces General Staff (1948-1952), the Chief of the Chief Intelligence Directorate of the USSR Armed Forces General Staff (1956-1957), Army General. He is an author of memoirs and numerous publications in the military press.
From May 1943 to 1946, Sergei Shtemenko headed the Operations Directorate of the General Staff. In late 1943, he participated in the preparation of operations of the Separate Coastal Army to liberate the Crimea; in February to March of 1944, he participated in the organization of German troops breaching and coordination of operations of the 1st and 2nd Baltic Fronts; in June 1944, Sergei Shtemenko made a significant contribution to the preparation and conduct of the Mogilev operation on the 2nd Belorussian Front; in July he was on the 3rd Baltic Front, assisting militarycommanders in preparation and implementation of the Pskov-Ostrov operation of 1944. In June of 1945, he participated in the arrangements for the Victory Parade on the Red Square in Moscow.
From November 1948 to June 1952, Sergei Shtemenko was the Chief of the General Staff, a Deputy Minister of the Armed Forces of the USSR. From June 1952 to March 1953, he was the Chief of Staff of the Group of Soviet Occupation Forces in Germany.
Since August 1968, Sergei Shtemenko was the First Deputy Chief of the General Staff – the Chief of Staff of the Joint Armed Forces of the Warsaw Treaty states.
