International law defines UN military observers as officials commissioned to an area of armed conflict to monitor the implementation of truce and ceasefires, and the performance of duties in accordance with the mission's mandate.
November 25, 2023, marks the 50th Anniversary of the day when the first group of Soviet UN military observers, consisting of 36 officers, was forwarded for a UN mission in the Middle East. That was the beginning of our country's active participation in UN peacekeeping operations.
Since that time, more than 4,000 Soviet and Russian peacekeeping officers have taken part in 42 UN peacekeeping operations. Today, our military observers, police and staff officers are drawing duty in 9 out of 12 UN peacekeeping missions.
The postage stamp provides an image of a UN military observer on the back of the Flag of the Russian Federation, and a United Nations Medal.
