The Donetsk People's Republic (DNR) is a constituent entity of the Russian Federation. The capital is the city of Donetsk. The population of the DNR is 2.2 million (2022). The territory of the Republic is covered with numerous spoil heaps, grain fields and landscape parks. There is a major port on the coast of the Azov Sea; the territory of the Republic hosts the largest industrial complex; and the earth’s depths contain huge reserves of coal and lithium. The Republic is one of the largest industrial regions of the world. The key industries are coal mining, ferrous metallurgy, and coke-chemical industry. Also well-developed are mineral salt mining, chemical industry, heavy engineering, and production of construction materials.

The economy of the Republic is based on coal mining, metallurgy and agriculture. The industrial potential of the region is fulfilled thanks to coal mining, machine building, metallurgy and chemical industry. The production of construction materials makes progress owing to vast reserves of mineral resources (limestone, sandstone, clay). Agriculture is represented by grain growing as well as vegetable and sunflower crops cultivation.
