On August 6, a postage stamp dedicated to Stanislav Govorukhin, a film director, a People’s Artist of the Russian Federation, was put into postal circulation

Stanislav Govorukhin (1936–2018) was a Soviet and Russian film actor, a film director, a screenwriter, a film producer, and political and public figure; he was a People’s Artist of the Russian Federation (2006). He was the Chairman of the State Duma Committee on Culture (2011 - 2018).

S Govorukhin was born on March 29 of 1936, in the city of Berezniki of the Sverdlovsk Region (presently, the Perm Territory). In 1958, he graduated from the Faculty of Geology of V.I. Ulyanov-Lenin Kazan State University. From 1959 to 1961, he worked as an editor and an assistant director at the Kazan Television Studio. In 1966, he graduated with honors from the Directing Faculty of the All-Russian Institute of Cinematography (VGIK). Until 1967, he worked as an assistant director, the director, and the producer of feature films at the Odessa Feature Film Studio. His first feature film, Vertical, co-directed with his course mate Boris Durov, became one of the top-grossing Soviet films of 1967.

In 1979, they co-wrote the screenplay for the film Pirates of the 20th Century, which became the undisputed hit of cinema distribution in the Soviet Union, having attracted 87.6 million viewers. Another action-packed film based on a screenplay by S. Govorukhin, The Secrets of Madame Wong, ranked sixth as of year-end 1986, while his own film adaptation of Agatha Christie’s thriller Ten Little Niggers ranked seventh in 1987.

From 1987 to 1993, he was the Director at the Mosfilm studio. He was a member of the Union of Cinematographers of the USSR. Since December of 1991, he was a member of the Confederation of Filmmakers’ Unions. He was the Artistic Director of the Vertikal film studio under the Mosfilm film studio group. He headed the Charitable Foundation for the Social Protection of Film Industry Veterans and Students of the Kinocenter Film School.

S. Govorukhin directed a great number of feature films, semi-documentary films, and documentary films, and wrote more than twenty screenplays, as well as several books. He also appeared in many films as an actor.

The postage stamp features a portrait of S. Govorukhin against a background of a movie camera, a clapperboard, and a film reel.
