On July 26, a postage stamp dedicated to the Russian Navy was put into postal circulation



The Navy (VMF) is one of the branches of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation, consisting of the following services: submarines, surface ships, naval aviation, coastal troops, and the Navy’s operational-strategic formations.

Submarine forces are the Navy’s striking force, capable of controlling vast expanses of the Global Ocean, deploying covertly and rapidly in the necessary directions, and delivering unexpected, powerful strikes from the depths of the ocean against maritime and land-based targets. The Navy’s main striking force consists of nuclear-powered submarines armed with ballistic and cruise missiles carrying nuclear warheads.

Under present-day conditions, surface forces remain the heart of the Navy. The development of ships capable of carrying aircraft and helicopters, as well as the transition of several classes of ships, including submarines, to nuclear propulsion, has significantly enhanced their combat capabilities. Equipment of ships with helicopters and aircraft significantly expands their ability to detect and attack enemy submarines. The traditional mission of surface ships is to strike enemy targets on enemy territory and to provide maritime defense of their own coastline.

Naval aviation is used to search for and destroy enemy naval forces, naval assault units, convoys, and individual ships (vessels) at sea and at bases; to provide air cover for naval formations and naval facilities against enemy air attacks; to destroy aircraft, helicopters, and cruise missiles; to conduct aerial reconnaissance; to guide its own striking forces toward enemy naval forces and to provide them with target designation. It is also employed in mine laying, mine countermeasures, electronic warfare, air transportation and airborne operations, and search-and-rescue operations at sea. Naval aviation is based on aircraft (helicopters) of various applications.

Coastal troops protect naval forces, ground forces, the civilian population, and coastal facilities from enemy surface ships; they defend naval bases and other critical naval facilities from the land, including defense against assaults by sea and air; they land and operate as part of naval and air-naval assault forces; they assist ground forces in anti-landing defense of coastal areas vulnerable to amphibious assaults; and they destroy surface ships, boats, and amphibious transport vehicles within the range of their weapons. The Coastal Forces consist of two branches: the Missile and Artillery troops and the Marine Corps.

The Navy’s operational-strategic formations are the Northern, Pacific, Baltic, and Black Sea Fleets, as well as the Caspian Flotilla; they serve as the core military force for carrying out national maritime policy objectives in their respective regions.

The postage stamp features a frigate, a strategic missile submarine, and an aircraft.

In addition to the issue of the postage stamp, JSC Marka produced First Day Covers and special cancels for Moscow, St. Petersburg, and Vilyuchinsk of the Kamchatka Territory.
