On July 22, an envelope with a commemorative stamp dedicated to the 100th Birth Anniversary of Sergei Baruzdin, a writer and a poet, was put into postal circulation

Sergei Baruzdin (1926–1991) was a Russian Soviet writer, a poet, and an editor; a member of the Union of Writers of the USSR. He was a laureate of the M. Gorky State Prize of the RSFSR. He was born on July 22 of 1926 in Moscow. In 1938, he published his first short stories in the Pioneer (Pioner) children’s magazine. He was a participant in the Great Patriotic War. He was called up for military service in 1943 and served as a private in the 113th Independent Reconnaissance Artillery Division. Baruzdin was a member of the Union of Writers since 1951. In 1958, he graduated from the A. Gorky Literature Institute. From 1957 to 1965, he was a Secretary of the Board of the Union of Writers of the RSFSR, and from 1967 onward, of the Union of Writers of the USSR. From 1965, he was the Editor-in-Chief of the Druzhba Narodov (Friendship of Peoples) magazine.

Over the course of his life, the writer authored more than 200 books. Among them, there are many poems, short stories, and novellas: the poetry collection Who Built This House (1950) and the collection The Little Flag (co-authored with Anatoly Aleksin), a trilogy about a girl named Svetlana, the novellas Ravi and Shashi (about baby elephants gifted to the USSR by India) and How Snezhok got to India (about an orphaned bear cub). The War became a central theme in S. Baruzdin’s work: for example, the novel Repeating the Past (1964), the novella Her Name Is Yolka, and the collection Stories About Women. He also wrote non-fiction prose for children (the story A Soldier Walked Down the Street), as well as stories and fairy tales about animals (The Hedgehog with a Cold, A Difficult Task).

The commemorative stamp provides a portrait of Sergei Baruzdin, the main image features photograph Soviet Tank Crews Celebrate Victory at the ‘Victory Column’ Monument by M. Redkin (1945) and excerpts from the writer’s story A Soldier Walked Down the Street.

In addition to the issue of the envelope with a commemorative stamp, JSC Marka produced special cancels for Moscow and St. Petersburg.
