The event was attended by Dmitry Terekhin, the Head of the Department of the Office of the President of the Russian Federation for the Development of Information and Communication Technologies and Communications Infrastructure of the Administration of the President of the Russian Federation; Alexander Shoitov, a Deputy Minister of Digital Development, Communications and Mass Media of the Russian Federation; Alexey Platonov, the Director of the Autonomous Non-Profit Organization Computer Network Interaction Center MSK-IX; Veronika Maksimenkova, the Director General of JSC Marka; Andrey Vorobyov, the Director of the Coordination Center of the .RU/.РФ domains; Alexander Ivanyuk, the Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Association of Documentary Telecommunications; and Kirill Izotov, the Director of Autonomous Non-Profit Organization RosNIIROS (Russian Research Institute for the Development of Public Networks).
July 12, 2001, is considered the official date of the organization’s founding. On that day, the Coordination Center for the National Internet Domain was established; its founders were the Regional Public Center for Internet Technologies (ROCIT), the Union of Internet Operators (SOI), the Association of Documentary Telecommunications (ADE), and the Russian Research Institute for the Development of Public Networks (RosNIIROS). This made it possible to separate administrative and technical functions, as well as to launch a distributed registration system through independent companies. In 2002, the coordination group transferred all its powers to the coordination center, and on January 4 of 2006, a replacement of the administrator of the Russian national domain was also finalized within the ICANN international corporation: the corresponding changes were introduced into the IANA top-level domain database. Today, the Russian segment of the domain name system is showing steady growth. Over 6.1 million domain names are registered in the .RU zone, and more than 800,000 in the Cyrillic .РФ domain. Domain registration services are provided nationwide by 185 accredited registrars from 13 Russian cities, covering all regions with partner networks.
