On September 25, a postage stamp dedicated to Artur Chilingarov will go into postal circulation in the Cavaliers of the Order “For Merit to the Fatherland” series
Artur Chilingarov (1939-2024) was an ocean scientist, an explorer of the Arctic and the Antarctic, a Hero of the Soviet Union and a Hero of the Russian Federation. Chilingarov was a Doctor of Geographical Sciences (2001), a professor, a Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences (2008) and the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences (1994). He was a Deputy of the State Duma of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation of several convocations and a member of the Federation Council of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation (2011-2014). Artur Chilingarov was awarded the Order For Merit to the Fatherland, 2-nd, 3-d and 4-th grades (2019, 2007, 2014).
In 1969-1971, he headed high-latitude scientific expedition North-21, was the chief of drifting stations North Pole-19 and North Pole-22. On September 20, 1970, accompanied by V. Grishchenko, he made the world's first underwater dive at the North Pole.
The Decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of February 14 of 1986, awarded Artur Chilingarov the title of Hero of the Soviet Union with presentation of the Order of Lenin and the Gold Star medal for exemplary performance of the task to free the Mikhail Somov research vessel from the Antarctic ice, skillful management of vessels during rescue operations and drifting, and courage and heroism displayed in so doing.
In 1990, he was elected President of the Association of Soviet Polar Explorers (presently, the Association of Polar Explorers of Russia).
In summer of 2007, Artur Chilingarov headed the Arctic-2007 High-Altitude Arctic Deep-Water Expedition. For courage and heroism displayed under extreme conditions and for successful completion of the High-Altitude Arctic Deep-Water Expedition, the Decree of the President of the Russian Federation of January 9, 2008, awarded him the title of Hero of the Russian Federation with presentation of the Gold Star medal as a special insignia.
The postage stamp provides a portrait of Artur Chilingarov and an image of the Order For Merit to the Fatherland.
In addition to the issue of the postage stamp, JSC Marka will produce First Day Covers and special cancels for Moscow, St. Petersburg, Arkhangelsk, Murmansk and Yakutsk, as well as a maxi-card.
