During the Great Patriotic War, he was a de-miner dog, a communications officer and an orderly; he participated in demining operations in the territory of the Leningrad Region, Stalingrad, Lisichansk, and Prague. The brave dog performed his main feat in the city of Pavlovsk of the Leningrad Region. On retreating from the city on the Neva, Nazis left a clockwork mine in the foundation of the Pavlovsk Palace. Dick discovered the mine an hour before the explosion.
A 2016 postage stamp in the Fauna of Russia series shows a German shepherd dog in the image of the Dobrynya puppy, who was handed over by the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation to French Ambassador to Russia Jean-Maurice Ripert in December of 2015.
