On August 23, a postcard with a commemorative stamp dedicated to the 150th Birth Anniversary of Alexander Vishnevsky, a surgeon, was put into postal circulation

Alexander Vishnevsky (1874-1948) was a Russian and Soviet surgeon, the creator of the famous therapeutic ointment; the founder of a family of doctors; a Full Member of the USSR Academy of Medical Sciences (1946), a Winner of the 2nd class Stalin Prize (1942).

A. Vishnevsky was born on August 23 (September 4) of 1874 in the village of Novoaleksandrovka (presently the village of Nizhny Chiryurt in the Kizilyurtovsky District of the Republic of Dagestan). In 1899, he graduated with honors from the Medical Faculty of the Imperial Kazan University (nowadays the Kazan (Volga Region) Federal University). In November of 1903, he defended his doctoral thesis. In April of 1912, he was elected Extraordinary Professor (a Professor without position) of the Department of Surgical Pathology of the Kazan University, and since 1916, he headed the Department of Hospital Surgery.

After the October Revolution, in 1918, A. Vishnevsky became a senior physician of the first Soviet hospital in Kazan, and in 1918-1926, he headed the departmental surgical clinic; then Vishnevsky was appointed director of the surgical clinic of the Central Institute for Advanced Training of Physicians and the All-Union Institute of Experimental Medicine in Moscow.

Alexander Vishnevsky is the author of more than 40 scientific works. He is the author of experimental physical investigations and numerous original works on surgery of the biliary tract, the urinary system, the thoracic cavity, neurosurgery, surgery of war injuries and purulent processes. He developed a scientific concept of the role of the nervous system influence on the inflammatory process and suggested new methods of treatment of inflammatory processes, purulent wounds, and a traumatic shock. Proceeding from the idea of weak irritation of the nervous system as a therapeutic factor, he successfully applied a special balsamic liquid ointment, referred to as the Vishnevsky's ointment, for the treatment of wounds and ulcerous processes. The Vishnevsky's Triad (methods of local anesthesia, Novocain blockades, and oil-balsamic dressings) became an epoch in the development of Soviet surgery, especially the military-field surgery. During the Great Patriotic War, these methods saved the lives of hundreds of thousands of wounded people.

The postcard provides an image of Academician Alexander Vishnevsky with colleagues during an operation to study methods of anesthesia; the commemorative stamp features his portrait.

In addition to the issue of the postcard with a commemorative stamp, JSC Marka produced special cancels for Moscow, Kazan and Makhachkala.
