A lighthouse is a tall tower-shaped building on the seashore designated to guide ships using visual observation, radar and sound detection. Many lighthouses in Russia can be classified as cultural heritage sites.
The Tolbukhin Lighthouse is the oldest in Russia and it is entered into the UNESCO World Heritage List as a monument. It was built by order of Peter the Great in 1719. Initially, it was named Kotlinsky, but in 1936, it was renamed Tolbukhin in honor of the first Kronstadt commandant Fedot Tolbukhin. The lighthouse is still in operation today and serves as an important orienting point in the Gulf of Finland.
