On November 10, stamp booklet Ancient Fauna was put into postal circulation

Ancient fauna and flora are objects under study of paleontology. Its main task is to study and reconstruct, from the remains found, biological features, appearance and lifestyle of extinct organisms, as well as their evolution and kinship relations.

On the territory of modern Russia, fossil species have been found and characterized of living organisms from all periods of the Earth's geological history including representatives of the mammoth fauna - a complex of mammals that evolved about 100,000 years ago in the extratropical zone of Eurasia and North America.

About 11 thousand years ago, due to sudden warming and humidifying of the climate, which led to radical changes in landscapes, the mammoth fauna broke up. Some species, such as the mammoth, the woolly rhinoceros, the Irish elk, the cave lion and the cave bear perished from the earth.

Wild camels, horses, yaks and saigas survived in the steppes of Central Asia. Bisons and koulans adapted to life in completely different natural zones. Reindeer and caribous, muskoxen, elks, Arctic foxes, wolverines, Arctic hares and other species are now widespread in the taiga zone and Arctic regions.

The stamp booklet comprises 8 postage stamps from the Paleontological Heritage of Russia and Fauna of Russia. Mammoth Fauna series, put into postal circulation in 2020 and 2023.
