On October 17, four postage stamps dedicated to Samara monuments were put into postal circulation in the Contemporary Art of Russia series

 
 

The Contemporary Art of Russia series is reflective of the artwork of contemporary authors who convey the atmosphere of new Russia, its uniqueness and dynamism, demonstrates the techniques and approaches in creating paintings and sculptural compositions peculiar to our era.

Zurab Tsereteli was born in 1934 in Tiflis (presently Tbilisi). In 1958, he graduated from the Department of Painting of the Tbilisi Academy of Arts and was employed by the Institute of History, Archaeology and Ethnography of the Georgian Academy of Sciences. Since 1985, Tsereteli headed the Department of Monumental and Decorative Art of the Tbilisi Academy of Arts. Since 1997, he has been the President of the Russian Academy of Arts; an Academician and a Corresponding Member of the Academy of Arts of the USSR (1988, 1979). A Hero of Socialist Labor (1990), a People's Artist of the USSR (1980), a People's Artist of the Russian Federation (1994), a winner of the Lenin Prize (1976), two State Prizes of the USSR (1970, 1982) and the State Prize of the Russian Federation (1996). A holder of the Order of Lenin (1990), a Full Cavalier of the Order of Merit for the Fatherland.

Stepan Karslyan was born in 1948 in the village of Khulgumo, Georgia. In 1970, he graduated from the Yerevan College, Department of Decorative and Applied Arts, and in 1979, he finished the Yerevan Art and Theatre Institute, the Department of Sculpture. Karslyan is a member of the Union of Artists of Russia. He works extensively and successfully in the monumental architectural plastics and easel sculpture, and is the author of more than 60 sculptures in bronze, stone, wood and concrete. For his sculpture Buratino (Pinocchio), Stepan Karslyan was awarded the Star Bridge prize for his contribution to the field of audiovisual arts for children and youth.

Konstantin Chernyavsky was born in 1959 in Rostov-on-Don. He is an Honored Artist of the Russian Federation. In 1983, he graduated from the Surikov Moscow State Art Institute, the Faculty of Sculpture. Chernyavsky is a participant of metropolitan, regional, republican, all-Union and foreign exhibitions. The sculptor's artworks are in museums and private collections in Russia and abroad.

Ivan Melnikov was born in 1954 in the city of Marganets in Dnepropetrovsk Region, Ukrainian SSR. Melnikov is a sculptor, an Honored Artist of the Russian Federation. He graduated from the Abai Kazakh Pedagogical Institute, the Faculty of Sculpture. In 1985-1990, Melnikov worked in creative sculpture groups in the Kardovsky House of Creativity in the city of Pereslavl-Zalessky, Yaroslavl Region. He participated in six sculpture symposia - in Samara, Yuzhnouralsk, Peterhof, Damascus (Syria), and Novokuibyshevsk. He is the author of more than 30 monumental works, which decorate the streets of cities of the Russian Federation and foreign countries.

The postage stamps show the following:

— sculpture Uncle Styopa the Militiaman by Z. Tsereteli (2015);
— sculpture Buratino (Pinocchio) by S. Karslyan (2013);
— monument to Comrade Sukhov by K. Chernyavsky (2012); and
— monument to Yury Detochkin by I. Melnikov (2012).

In addition to the issue of the postage stamps, JSC Marka produced First Day Covers and special cancels for Moscow, St. Petersburg and Samara.
