On August 18, a stamp dedicated to the Gorodki sport was put into postal circulation in the Sports series

The Gorodki sport is the world’s only all-Russian folk individual and team all-season game sport. The essence consists in the alternate knocking out beyond the perimeter of the “city” (a marked area) of wooden pins (“villages”) arranged in preset configurations with a gorodki bat (a throwing sports implement) according to certain rules.

The date of the official recognition of the sport is August 19, 1923, when the first All-Union Competition took place in Moscow. Simultaneously, the Union Federation of the Gorodki Sport of the USSR was established, which was later transformed into the All-Union Federation of the Gorodki Sport. At the start, the game used to be played mostly on the ground with wooden bats. In the 1920s, paved courts began to appear. Gorodki players began to use shackled bats. In 1933, new rules were issued, which defined 15 unified configurations out of more than 220 historical Gorodki configurations invented in different regions of the country.

Since 1936, National and Republican Championships began to be carried out. All the sports qualifications available in the high-level sport were conferred to Gorodki players.

In 1993, the Russian Federation of the Gorodki Sport was established and regional federations originated.

Since 1995 and 2001, accordingly, European Championships and World Championships have been organized.

The postage stamp provides an image of a player throwing out a Kolodets (Well) configuration.

In addition to the issue of the postage stamp, JSC Marka produced First Day Covers and special cancels for Moscow, St. Petersburg, Penza and Ryazan, as well as a maxi-card.
