On April 12, a stamp dedicated to the 250th Birth Anniversary of Yu. Lisyansky, a navigator, an explorer, a participant of the first Russian round-the-world expedition, was put into postal circulation

Yuri Lisyansky (1773–1837) was a navigator, an explorer, and a participant of the first Russian round-the-world expedition.

He was born on March 6 of 1773, in the town of Nezhin. From 1783, he was a cadet in the Naval Cadet Corps, where he made acquaintance with Ivan Krusenstern.

Due to the beginning of the Russian-Swedish War of 1788-1790, the Corps made a pre-term graduation, and midshipman Lisyansky was assigned to 38-gun frigate Podrazislav of the Baltic Fleet. With the frigate, he participated in sea battles of Gogland, Eland, Revelsk and Vyborg. In March of 1789, he was promoted to a warrant officer “for distinguished service” and in 1793, to the rank of lieutenant.

In 1793-1799, Lisyansky did his military service as a volunteer on the ships of the British Navy. During those years, he sailed extensively to North America and the Canadian coasts, South Africa, India and the West Indies.

Upon his return to Russia, in 1798, he was promoted to the rank of captain-lieutenant and commanded the Avtroil frigate. In November of 1802, he was awarded the Order of St. George, 4th class, for 18 sea campaigns.

In 1803-1806, Ivan Krusenstern and Yuri Lisyansky on sailing sloops Nadezhda and Neva executed the first circumnavigation in the history of the Russian Fleet. During the three-year expedition, the ships sailed together only 375 days and 720 days on their own. Yuri Lisyansky was the first to describe Hawaii in his book Journey Around the World (in 2 volumes, 1812). During his cruising, he made detailed observations of winds and currents, compiled rich mineral, zoological, ethnographic and botanical collections, described tens of islands and many hundreds of miles of coastlines. For his services, he was promoted to captain second rank and in August of 1806, he was awarded the Order of St. Vladimir, 3rd class, money reward and life pension.

The postage stamp provides a portrait of Yuri Lisyansky and an image of sloops Nadezhda and Neva.

In addition to the issue of the postage stamp, JSC Marka produced First Day Covers and special cancels for Moscow, St. Petersburg and Kaliningrad.
