Konstantin Ushinsky (1823–1871) was a writer, the founder of scientific pedagogy in Russia. In his pedagogical papers, Ushinsky substantiated the necessity of forming a whole person and therefore he believed the main task of education was to prepare a person for independent life. He worked a lot on compiling reading books for children, such as Detskii Mir (Children's World) and Rodnoe Slovo (Native Word) - a Russian textbook, which went through 157 printings, etc. They became the first popular and publicly available Russian textbooks for elementary education of children.
This is the first philatelic issue within the framework of the Year of the Teacher and Mentor declared by the President of the Russian Federation. The postage stamp provides a portrait of Konstantin Ushinsky against the background of a classroom. On March 19, the postage stamp was put into postal circulation in the quantity of 120 thousand items and went on sale in post offices throughout the country and the Collectioner show room chain.
As Sergei Kravtsov, the Minister of Education, made a comment, "The cancellation of a stamp commemorating the 200th Birth Anniversary of Konstantin Ushinsky is a tribute to the memory and respect for his work and merits. It was Ushinsky who laid the foundation for native pedagogy, specifying that it is important not only to teach and impart knowledge, but also to educate the future citizen - a Human with a capital letter. Today, we say thank you to all teachers, all educators and mentors. After all, the profession of the teacher is the principal profession on the Earth".
On October 5, 2023, an artistic stamped envelope with the Year of the Teacher and Mentor symbols will additionally go into postal circulation timed to the Teacher's Day.
