Aleksandr Yefimov (1923–2012) was a Soviet stunt strike pilot during the Great Patriotic War, a military commander, twice Hero of the Soviet Union (1944, 1945), Marshal of Aviation (1975).
Yefimov was born on February 6, 1923 in the village of Kantemirovka of the Voronezh Province into the family of a railroader. In 1942, he graduated from the Voroshilovgrad Military Aviation Pilot School named after Proletariat of Donbass. He was on the front of the Great Patriotic War since August of 1942. During the war, Yefimov performed as many as 288 mission sorties in the IL-2 attack aircraft; in so doing he destroyed in person and as a member of a group 85 enemy planes on airfields and 8 planes were shot down in air battles, a lot of enemy personnel and materiel was eliminated.
In peacetime, Aleksandr Yefimov continued to serve in the Soviet Air Force. In 1951, he graduated from the Monino Air Force Academy; then, in 1957, he graduated from the Voroshilov Highest Military Academy. From October of 1964 till March of 1969, he was the Commander of the 57th Air Army in the Precarpathian Military District. From February of 1985 till July of 1990, he was the Commander-in-Chief of the Air Force, a Deputy Minister of Defense of the USSR.
The commemorative stamp provides an image of the emblem of celebration of the 80th Anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War of 1941–1945; the main image features a portrait of Aleksandr Yefimov, set against a background, there are Il-2 airplanes and two Gold Star medals.
In addition to the issue of the envelope with a commemorative stamp, JSC Marka produced special cancels for Moscow and Voronezh.
