Valery Kharlamov (1948-1981) was a Soviet ice hockey player, a forward of the CSKA team (1967-1981) and the USSR national team (1969-1980), a Merited Master of Sports of the USSR (1969). He was a two-time Olympic champion (1972, 1976) and eight-time World champion. Kharlamov was the Top Hockey Player of the USSR (1972, 1973) and one of the leading hockey players of the USSR in the 1970s, recognized both in this country and abroad.
Over his 15-year sporting career, Kharlamov played 438 games for CSKA, scored 293 goals, and played 123 games as a member of the USSR national team at the Olympics and World Championships.
In recognition of Kharlamov's service to the club, he is assigned number 17 in the CSKA. His name is immortalized in the IIHF Hall of Fame (since 1998) and the Toronto Hockey Hall of Fame (since 2005).
V.B. Kharlamov is a holder of two Orders of the Red Banner of Labor, the Order of the Badge of Honor, and the Medal for Labor Valor.
The commemorative stamp provides a portrait of Valery Kharlamov; the main illustration features a fragment of the USSR-Canada Super Series match of 1972 in Moscow.
