On January 25, an envelope with a commemorative stamp dedicated to the liberation of Voronezh from Nazi invaders was put into postal circulation in the On the 80th Anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War of 1941–1945 series



In the course of the Great Patriotic War, in the summer of 1942, aerial bombardment of Voronezh became almost unceasing. In that context, the Supreme Command Headquarters established a separate Voronezh Front on July 7 of 1942, and Nikolai Vatutin was appointed its Commander. The Headquarters of the Front was located in the front-line settlement of Anna.

The decisive battle for Voronezh was carried on as part of the Voronezh-Kastornoye Offensive Operation. The military activities began in the morning of January 24, 1943. The battle for Voronezh lasted 8 days from January 24 to February 2 of 1943. The participants in the battle were the 38th, 40th and 60th Armies of the Voronezh Front, the army of the Bryansk Front and the military of two air armies.

On January 25 of 1943, the right-bank part of the city was completely cleared from the occupying army. Soldiers of the 60th Army hoisted the Red Banner of Liberation on the balcony of the Voronezh hotel (8, Lenin Sq.).

Nowadays, Voronezh rightfully bears the distinguished title of the City of Military Glory.

The commemorative stamp features the celebration emblem of the 80th Anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War of 1941–1945; the main illustration provides a photo of a soldier mounting the Red Banner of Liberation and a map of the Voronezh-Kastornoye Offensive Operation.

In addition to the issue of the envelope with a commemorative stamp, JSC Marka produced special cancels for Moscow and Voronezh.
