On June 18, 1997, the first St. Petersburg International Economic Forum was held in the Tauride Palace under the auspices of the Federation Council, the Interparliamentary Assembly of the CIS member states and with the support of the Government of the Russian Federation.

Over the years, the Forum has become the world's basic platform for interaction of representatives of business circles and discussion of the key economic issues facing Russia, emerging markets and the world on the whole. Every year, the Forum is attended by more than 10 thousand participants from Russia and foreign countries, including state and government leaders of developing countries, heads of major companies, as well as the world's leading experts from among representatives of science, mass media and civil society.
