The Republic of Mari El was established on November 4, 1920, as the Mari Autonomous Region; on December 9, 1992, it was given its present name, the Republic of Mari El. 

 
 
The Republic of Mari El is a constituent part of the Volga Federal District and belongs to the Volga-Vyatka Economic Region. Its area is 23.3 thousand sq. km, and the population is 679 thousand people (2020). The capital of the Republic is the city of Yoshkar-Ola.
