With the outbreak of the Great Patriotic War, Natalya Kovshova and Maria Polivanova finished sniper courses and went to the front as volunteers. In October 1941, they participated in the defense of Moscow and from January 1942, they fought at the North-Western Front. Young girls bravely fought against the Nazi invaders and held sniper training for sniper platoon fighters.
On August 14, 1942, the girls fought against the advancing Nazi troops near the Sutoki village, Novgorod Region. They were covering the enemy by well-aimed fire to the last bullet. When there was no longer any hope left of a positive outcome of the battle, Natalya and Maria blew themselves up with grenades along with the surrounding Nazi soldiers.
The envelope with a commemorative stamp provides an image of the emblem of celebration of the 75
th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945; the main image features a joint portrait of N.V. Kovshova and M.S. Polivanova.
In addition to the issue of the envelope with a commemorative stamp, JSC
Marka will produce special cancels for Moscow, Ufa and Aleksin of the Tula region.
