Vote for the stamp of Russia

Voting for the best postal stamp at the annual contest of the Association of State Postal Operators of Europe (PostEurop) has been launched. The general subject of this year issuance is ancient post routes.

At the competition, Russia presents an art stamp featuring the Kholmogory postroad (Arkhangelsk — Vologda — Yaroslavl — Moscow) that had been known as early as in the end of the XV century, but only a section of it to Vologda was in use. The first offers to establish a postal service in Arkhangelsk were made to Tsar Alexey Mikhailovich in the middle of the XVII century. At that time, the postroad followed nearly the same path as the present-day Moscow   Arkhangelsk highway: through the trading quarter of the Trinity Monastery, Pereslavl-Zalessky, Rostov the Great, Yaroslavl, Danilov, Vologda, Velsk, Shenkursk, and Kholmogory. The oldest Russian regular postal service between Arkhangelsk and Moscow was started under the rule of Peter the Great in 1693.

The stamps will be produced in the quantity of 216 thousand copies. The design artist is Olga Shushlebina.

Russian stamps have repeatedly won prizes at international competitions. Thus, Russian stamps twice became the winners of the competition within the “Europe” program: these were the Visit to Russia and the Toys stamps in 2012 and 2015, respectively.
