March 9, an official cancellation ceremony of a postage stamp dedicated to FIFA Confederations Cup Russia 2017 took place



The ceremony took place at the St Petersburg Stadium today. Alexey Sorokin, the CEO of the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia™ Local Organizing Committee, and Vladimir Shelikhov, Deputy Head of the Federal Communications Agency, signed the first day covers. A souvenir frame with the stamp and the envelope was presented to Fatma Samura, FIFA Secretary General.

FIFA Confederations Cup is a football tournament for national teams held by FIFA in a country that will host a FIFA World Cup™ the following year. The first FIFA Confederations Cup was officially organized and held by FIFA in 1997, succeeding the King Fahd Cup previously staged in Saudi Arabia.

The eighth rehearsal tournament will take place in four Russian cities of Kazan, Moscow, St Petersburg and Sochi from 17 June till 2 July 2017. Eight teams will participate in the tournament — the FIFA World Cup™ holder (Germany), the host nation (Russia), as well as winners of six regional championships (Australia, Chile, Mexico, New Zealand, Portugal and Cameroon).

“The postage stamp, the printrun of which amounts to a whopping 1,242,000 copies, depicts the FIFA Confederations Cup Russia 2017 Official Trophy. I am sure this stamp will become popular not only among collectors but also among football fans, as well as preserve the memory of this Confederations Cup in the history of the world’s philately”, said Mr. Shelikhov.

Additionally, JSC “Marka” has manufactured an illustrated cover with a block of four stamps and first day cover with cancellation (Moscow) inside, as well as special cancellation postmarks for FIFA Confederations Cup Russia 2017 Host Cities (Kazan, Moscow, St Petersburg and Sochi).
