The event was held in the Central House of Writers in Moscow as a part of the “My time is still not limited...” poetic evening, dedicated to the oeuvres of the great Russian poet of the XX century. Signatures and seals of a cancellation postmark were put by Oleg Dukhovnitskiy, Head of the Federal Communications Agency; Mikhail Seslavinskiy, head of the Federal Agency on Press and Mass Communications; Pavel Nerler (Polyan), Chairman of the Mandelshtam Society; and Galina Maximova, Director of the Central House of Writers.
An envelope depicts a picture of the anniversary logo and a portrait of Osip Mandelshtam. 1 million copies were released into circulation. It is available in every post office of our country and the citizens are able to use the envelopes for sending the correspondence throughout Russia.
“The release of the envelope has an important educational value, and will not only preserve the memory of the great poet, but it will also popularize Russian literature, reading and book culture in all its manifestations”, - said Oleg Dukhovnitskiy, Head of the Federal Communications Agency.
Osip Mandelstam was an outstanding poet, essayist, translator and literary critic. He was born in Warsaw in 1891, six years later his family moved to St. Petersburg. One of the greatest Russian poets of the XX century began his poetic career as a symbolist. In November 1933, Mandelshtam wrote the epigram “We live, not feeling the earth beneath us...” and was arrested and sent into exile. In 1938 the poet was arrested again and sent to the second exile to the Far East. Mandelstam died of typhus in the transit camp on December 27, 1938.
