On 3 December, an official cancellation ceremony of three postage stamps of the Outstanding Russian Lawyers series dedicated to Nikolai Muravyev, Konstantin Pobedonostsev and Nikolai Tagantsev took place

The participants of the ceremony were Alexander Konovalov, Minister for Justice of the Russian Federation; Oleg Dukhovnitskiy, Head of the Federal Communications Agency; Viktor Blazheev, Rector of the Kutafin Moscow State Law University; and Alexander Sukharev, Minister for Justice of the RSFSR 1984-1988, Prosecutor General of the USSR 1988-1990, Advisor to Prosecutor General of the Russian Federation and a WWII veteran. The special series of postage stamps comprises public officials, who devoted their lives to improving law system and legal doctrine of the Russian state.



All three of them have made a significant contribution to developing national legal science and law practice. Konstantin Pobedonostsev (1827–1907) was the Chief Procurator of the Most Holy Synod, a member of the State Council of the Russian Empire and a legal scholar. He was the author of numerous works on legal, historical and social topics, which predetermined the development of both legal and political spheres of the country for many years. Nikolai Muravyev (1850–1908) was the Minister for Justice and Procurator-General of the Russian Empire, a member of the State Council, a famous lawmaker. During his time in office national judicial system was reformed – a «Directive to officials of prosecutor’s supervision in court chambers and district courts” was issued in 1896, introduction of court statutes was completed within Russia. Nikolai Tagantsev (1843–1923) was a public official, famous forensic scientist, scholar and lecturer of law. Tagantsev’s lawmaking initiatives concerning criminal law and judicial legislation of the Russian Empire were several decades in advance of their time, and his scholarly endeavors influenced modern Russian law. “The postage stamp featuring portraits of outstanding lawyers is important to preserve history and culture of Russia.



Drawing attention of general public to their multi-faceted activity serves the cause of patriotic upbringing of the new generation”, said the Head of the Federal Communications Agency. Additionally, FSUE PTC “Marka” has manufactured a first day cover and special cancellation postmarks for Moscow, St Petersburg and Penza. Design: R. Komsa. Face value: 17 RUB. Size of stamps: 37×37 mm, size of sheets: 131×131 mm. Form of issue: sheets with illustrated margins of 8 stamps (3×3) and a coupon. Circulation: 272,000 copies of each stamps (34,000 sheets).
