On July 30, in the framework of a series “Figures of the world culture” an envelope with commemorative stamp “The 200th birth anniversary of Richard Wagner (1813-1883), composer” is issued

Wilhelm Richard Wagner (1813-1883) is a German composer, musical director, musical writer and theatre worker. He was the author of opera libretto, drama, poems, musical and theoretical works, critical reviews, essays on composers researches on art history, articles on policy and philosophy issues.

In 1839-1842 Wagner wrote his first mature works: “Faust Overture” and opera “The Flying Dutchman”, in 1852-1859 he finished a literary text of opera tetralogy “The Ring of the Nibelung” and its first part “The Rhinegold” and “The Valkyrie”, opera “Tristan and Isolde”. 

He played an outstanding role in reforming of operatic art. Peculiar expressiveness of the vocal parts of his compositions and complexity of orchestral accompaniment put new challenges to the singers. Richard Wagner was one of the brilliant representatives of conductor’s art. He had performed numerous times in different European cities as well as Saint-Petersburg and Moscow.


The envelope with commemorative stamp depicts the composition of symbols of various art movements:  a lyre, a palette, a book, a feather, a column, a theatre curtain; Richard Wagner’s portrait against the background of “Lohengrin” opera score fragment.
