On April 12, 1961, world's first cosmonaut Yuri A. Gagarin got over the terrestrial gravity and circled our planet in 108 minutes on board the Vostok-1 spacecraft. After an orbit pass around the Earth, the spacecraft daughter landed in the Saratov region and Gagarin was ejected nearby.
The Cosmonautics Day is celebrated annually on April 12. In 1962, in the first anniversary of the manned space flight, a government decree was signed to establish a new holiday in the USSR, the Cosmonautics Day. Six years later, the event gained an international status and the Aviation and Cosmonautics Day was instituted.
On April 7, 2011, the 65th session of the UN General Assembly in its resolution declared 12 April as the International Day of Human Space Flight.
