Pavel Matveevich Obukhov (1820–1869) was a mining engineer and a metallurgy scientist. He was the founder of large-scale production of cast steel and steel gun barrels in Russia.
In the late 1850s, Obukhov devised a design of a new factory for steel artillery production, which came into commission in 1860 and was named Knyaze-Mikhailovsky plant. This event marked the beginning of the cast steel employment for the production of cannon barrels, which was a turning point in the history of Russian artillery.
The commemorative stamp provides images of Russian warriors of different times; the major image presents P. Obukhov’s portrait and steel cannons.
