The official birth date of the Club is considered to be May 25 of 1925, when the physical culture team of the Leningrad Metal Works was formed. In 1931, thefactory football team began to play in the city championships, and later on, it became a permanent participant in the national championships. During this period, the team was named Stalin Team of LMZ, and since 1936, it was referred as Stalinets; in that time, its main colors - white and blue - were approved. In the 1940 season, the football team became known as Zenit.
In the summer of 1950, Zenit attained its own stadium for training and games. It was Kirov stadium opened on July 30 on Krestovsky Island. In the early 1960s, Zenit under the tuition of coach E. Eliseev achieved good results, reaching the semifinals in the Cup of the USSR and the final in the Cup of Florence.
The modern symbols of the Club are the famous Zenit arrow with the inscription of the team name and a star as a symbol of five-time champion’s title. Today Zenit is a Russian football club playing in the Premier League. It was the Champion of the USSR in 1984, a ten-time Champion of Russia, the Winner of the Cup of the USSR in 1944, a five-time Winner of the Cup of Russia, the Winner of the 1985 Cup season, a nine-time winner of the Super Cup of Russia, the winner of the 2003 Premier League Cup, the winner of the UEFA Cup of 2007/2008, and the winner of the 2008 UEFA Super Cup.
