The year of 2025 will mark the 200th Anniversary of the foundation of the Moscow State Stroganov Academy of Design and Applied Arts. More than one generation of outstanding creative personalities was fostered within the walls of this educational institution; famous painters and sculptors used to give classes here.
In 1896-1917, the director was Nikolay Globa, an Academician of the Imperial Academy of Arts. He carried out an essential reorganization of the Academy, introduced new programs, organized art and industrial workshops, invited talented teachers, including sculptor Nikolay Andreev, the author of many monuments, including those to Nikolay Gogol and Alexander Ostrovsky in Moscow.
Prior to 1901, a professor of the Stroganov Academy was Lev Kekushev, one of the greatest masters of the Art Nouveau style in Moscow. He created about 100 architectural projects, including the Khludov Apartment Building, the Nosov Mansion, Elektrozavodskaya Street, and Iberian Trade Rows, Nikolskaya Street.
In 1955-1967, Zakhar Bykov became the rector of the Stroganov Academy. It was owing to his efforts that the current building was constructed and the Applied Art Faculty was formed.
The postage stamps provide portraits of architect Lev Kekushev against A. Ermakov's wooden dacha and outbuilding in Mamontovka (1900s); sculptor N. Andreev against the monument to Nikolai Gogol in Moscow (1909); artist N. Globa against his painting The Landscape (ca. 1931); and artist Z. Bykov against the draft cover for the Dobrolet booklet (1923).
