The Kurchatov Institute is the largest Russian scientific research institute.

The Kurchatov Institute played a key role in promotion of the country's safety and development of the most important strategic directions of Russian Soviet science and industry. The Institute was founded in Moscow in 1943 as Laboratory No. 2 of the USSR Academy of Sciences with the view of tackling the problem of development of atomic weapons. In 1960, the Institute was named after its founder Igor Kurchatov, and in 1991, it received the status of the Russian Research Center.

The postage stamp provides an image of the logo designed for the 75th Anniversary of National Research Center Kurchatov Institute as well as a surcharge of 48 rubles and an overprint of the 80th Anniversary of the Institute.
