The Mining University is the first higher technical education institution in Russia founded by Empress Catherine II in 1773. The original name of the University was the Mining School.
The Mining University conducts intensive studies on the basic problems of the development of the raw material base of the country, in the sphere of rational nature management, development of progressive energy-saving mining technologies and processing of minerals, and reduction of an anthropogenic impact on ecosystems.
The University houses the Mining Museum, which stores unique minerals, ore, geologic materials, collections of models and prototype units on the history of mining and mining equipment, products of stone-cutting and jewelry art. The funds of the museum contain 240 thousand exhibits.
