The Kabardino-Balkar Republic is a constituent entity of the Russian Federation. It was formed in 1922 as the Kabardino-Balkar Autonomous Oblast and since 1992, it has its modern name the Kabardino-Balkar Republic. It makes part of the North Caucasian Federal District; the capital is the city of Nalchik. The official languages are Kabardinian, Balkarian, and Russian. The population is 870.4 thousand people (2022). The area is 12 thousand sq. km.
The economy of the Republic is based on agriculture (grain crops: wheat, corn, millet; industrial crops: sunflower, hemp; dairy and meat cattle farming) as well as timber logging.
The territory of Kabardino-Balkaria is home to the Prielbrusye (Mount Elbrus) National Park, Kabardino-Balkarian Mountain Reserve and 11 state wildlife areas.
