The Cathedral of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God was the main temple of the Kazan Bogoroditsky Monastery. It was built in 1807 to replace the dilapidated stone cathedral of the 1590s. According to legends, it stood on the very place where in the XVI century there was a burned-down house of the Sagittarius Danila Onuchin and a miraculous icon was found. Emperor Paul I himself took part in the laying of the new cathedral. The author of the project was the famous Russian architect I. E. Starov. The consecration of the church took place on May 30, 1808.
It was perhaps the most beautiful cathedral of the Kazan diocese, which was a magnificent example of Russian classicism. Its height was 43 meters. On three sides, the temple had portals with majestic columns supporting the pediments. The interior of the temple was decorated with elegant wall paintings. The three-tiered iconostasis was designed by the architect M. E. Yemelyanov, and the icons for it were painted by the famous Kazan artist V. S. Turin. Two main shrines of the monastery were kept in the church: the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God and the especially revered image of the Savior Not Made with Hands. In the 1930s, most of the monastery's ensemble was subjected to barbaric destruction: stone walls were demolished, the six-tiered bell tower and the Cathedral of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God were blown up.
On November 4, 2015, the President of the Republic of Tatarstan, Rustam Minnikhanov, signed a decree "On the establishment of the Bulgarian Islamic Academy and the reconstruction of the Cathedral of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God". At the moment, the exterior of the recreated cathedral of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God has a completely completed appearance — crosses are installed on the domes, mosaic icons appeared on the facade of the temple, the area around the temple is landscaped. The cathedral has become one of the recognizable architectural dominants of the city. All the picturesque decoration fully corresponds to the historical appearance, and the work on its reconstruction is carried out exactly on time and is coming to its completion. The rite of the great consecration of the Cathedral of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God is tentatively scheduled for July 21, 2021.
